Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama says he intends to use his planned visit to Russia for the Russia-Africa Summit to urge President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire, highlighting the potential role of African leaders in international peace efforts.

“I’m going to Russia for the Russia-Africa summit and try to convince President Putin to have a ceasefire if I can,” Mahama said, outlining his diplomatic objective ahead of the summit.

The proposed engagement reflects an effort to use high-level diplomatic dialogue to encourage a halt to hostilities in the war involving Russia and Ukraine, a conflict that has continued to raise concerns over international security, economic stability and humanitarian conditions.

A ceasefire could create an opportunity for negotiations, humanitarian access and efforts to reduce civilian suffering. However, achieving one would require agreement between the parties involved, as well as arrangements for monitoring compliance and addressing the issues that have prolonged the conflict.

Mahama’s stated intention also highlights Africa’s interest in contributing to international peace and security discussions, rather than remaining a spectator to conflicts with consequences that extend beyond the countries directly involved.

The Russia-Africa Summit provides a platform for African governments and Russian officials to discuss political relations, trade, investment, security and other areas of cooperation. Such meetings can also provide opportunities for leaders to raise concerns about international conflicts and explore diplomatic approaches to resolving them.

For Ghana, engagement with Moscow could offer an opportunity to communicate its position directly to Russian leadership. Whether such discussions produce progress towards a ceasefire would depend on the willingness of the parties to the conflict to engage in negotiations and accept mutually agreed terms.
