The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has expressed pride that Tanzania is part of the celebrations for the Kiswahili language day , which boasts approximately 200 million speakers worldwide.
President Samia stated that Kiswahili has expanded to countries like Japan, the United States, Finland, and South Africa. As a government, they recognize the contributions of all stakeholders in promoting this language.
“I am delighted that on July 1, the international general assembly unanimously agreed to designate July 7 as the official day to commemorate this day,” said President Samia.
On July 7, the world celebrates World Kiswahili Language Day, a special day established by UNESCO in 2021 to recognize the importance of the Kiswahili language and its contribution to communication and culture in Africa and globally.
This day provides an opportunity to strengthen the use of Kiswahili and promote African culture through this language, which has a long and rich history.

Kiswahili, spoken by over 200 million people, is an official language in several East and Central African countries such as Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is also a working language of the East African Community and the African Union.

Universities and language institutions will use this day to conduct lectures and discussions about the history of Kiswahili, its significance in education, social and economic development, and its role in maintaining peace and unity.
