By launching a fresh tender, the government hopes to attract reputable international investors and infrastructure developers with experience in large-scale aviation projects.

The Kenyan government has announced a fresh international tender to expand the country’s main aviation gateway, a move aimed at boosting passenger capacity and strengthening Nairobi’s role as a major travel hub in East Africa.

Speaking during a press briefing, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the government has opened a new bidding process for the modernization and expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The project is expected to significantly upgrade airport infrastructure while improving efficiency in handling the growing number of international and regional travelers.

According to the Transport Ministry, the planned development will include construction of new passenger facilities and the upgrading of critical airport infrastructure, including runways used for aircraft takeoff and landing. Once completed, the expanded airport is projected to handle up to 10 million passengers annually.

The airport, located in Nairobi, serves as Kenya’s primary international gateway and one of the busiest aviation centers in East Africa. It connects travelers to destinations across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, making it an important hub for both tourism and business travel.

Officials say the expansion is necessary as passenger traffic continues to grow steadily. Over the past decade, Kenya has experienced increasing international travel due to tourism, trade and regional integration within East Africa. Aviation experts believe improving the airport’s capacity will help reduce congestion while supporting the country’s economic growth.

The new tender follows a decision by President William Ruto to cancel an earlier airport expansion arrangement that had been linked to a foreign infrastructure proposal. The government said the previous process raised concerns regarding transparency and procurement procedures, prompting authorities to halt it and restart the project under a new competitive bidding framework.

By launching a fresh tender, the government hopes to attract reputable international investors and infrastructure developers with experience in large-scale aviation projects. Officials say the new process is designed to ensure transparency while allowing Kenya to secure a partner capable of delivering modern airport facilities that meet global aviation standards.

Analysts say the planned upgrade could strengthen Kenya’s position as a key aviation hub in East Africa. Nairobi’s strategic location already makes it a major transit point for passengers traveling between Africa, Europe and Asia. Expanding the airport could further enhance the city’s competitiveness against other regional hubs.

Improved infrastructure is also expected to benefit airlines, cargo operators and travelers by providing more efficient passenger processing, upgraded safety systems and modern airport technology. For Kenya’s tourism industry, which remains one of the country’s largest economic sectors, a larger and more efficient airport could help attract even more international visitors.

As the new bidding process begins, aviation experts say global construction and infrastructure firms are likely to show strong interest in the project. If successfully implemented, the expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport could become one of the most significant aviation infrastructure developments in East Africa in recent years.

For now, authorities say the next step will involve evaluating proposals from potential investors before moving forward with the construction phase. The project reflects Kenya’s broader strategy of investing in modern transport infrastructure to support long-term economic growth and regional connectivity.
