Iran has announced the discovery of a major natural gas field estimated to contain more than 7.5 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas, with the country’s Oil Minister putting its potential value at approximately $165.12 billion.

The announcement highlights Iran’s substantial natural gas reserves and comes as Tehran continues efforts to expand domestic energy production and strengthen its position in global energy markets.

Iran’s Oil Minister said the newly identified resource could represent a significant addition to the country’s gas reserves, potentially supporting energy security and future production capacity.

The reported discovery is particularly significant for Iran, which holds some of the world’s largest proven natural gas reserves but has faced challenges in developing its energy sector because of international sanctions, investment constraints and restrictions on access to advanced technology.

With demand for natural gas remaining important for electricity generation, industrial production and household consumption, additional reserves could provide Tehran with greater flexibility in meeting domestic energy needs.

The reported 7.5 trillion cubic feet of gas also underscores the scale of the discovery. However, the commercial value of a gas resource depends on factors including recoverable volumes, development costs, infrastructure, market prices and the ability to bring the field into production.

Iran has in recent years prioritized the development of its oil and gas resources as part of a broader strategy to increase production, reduce energy shortages and generate additional revenue.

If successfully developed, the new field could strengthen Iran’s long-term energy outlook and potentially contribute to expanded gas supplies for domestic and regional markets.

The announcement comes amid continued geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran’s energy sector, with Western sanctions limiting the country’s ability to attract international investment and access some advanced technologies.

For Tehran, the discovery represents a potentially important strategic asset at a time when energy security and control over domestic resources remain central to its economic and geopolitical priorities.
