India to Repatriate 18,000 Citizens from U.S.

India has committed to repatriating approximately 18,000 of its citizens who are living in the United States without legal documentation.

This step reflects the country’s dedication to addressing migration issues while preserving strong diplomatic and economic ties with the U.S.

The decision was announced following high-level talks between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussions emphasized a mutual commitment to tackling irregular migration and expanding legal pathways for Indian professionals in the United States.

According to officials, this agreement is part of a broader effort to reinforce the United States-India partnership, particularly in the area of skilled migration. The H-1B visa program, which is vital for Indian IT professionals, remains a cornerstone of this collaboration. Indian nationals accounted for nearly 78% of the 265,777 H-1B visas issued during the fiscal year ending September 2023, underscoring their significant contribution to the U.S. workforce.

A spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs said, “Both nations are working together to curb illegal migration while creating more opportunities for legal migration. This initiative reflects India’s proactive approach to global mobility and cooperation.”

While the official number of undocumented Indians in the U.S. is estimated at 18,000, independent studies suggest a much higher figure. Pew Research Center estimates indicate that roughly 725,000 undocumented Indians currently reside in the United States, making them the third-largest group after Mexican and Salvadoran nationals.

This move aligns with U.S. efforts to address illegal immigration under the Biden administration’s policies. By working closely with India, the U.S. hopes to mitigate challenges linked to undocumented migrants while supporting legal migration frameworks that benefit both economies.

For India, ensuring legal pathways to the U.S. is a strategic priority. The initiative not only strengthens bilateral relations but also protects opportunities for Indian professionals seeking employment in the U.S., particularly in sectors like information technology, healthcare, and education.

The repatriation process is expected to unfold over several months, involving close coordination between Indian and U.S. authorities. While the logistical challenges are significant, both nations view this as a step forward in creating a balanced approach to migration that respects laws and fosters mutual growth.

India’s active participation in addressing this issue signals its broader commitment to global migration governance, ensuring that the rights and aspirations of its citizens are safeguarded while upholding international agreements. This collaborative approach exemplifies the growing partnership between two of the world’s largest democracies.
