The Higher Education Loan Board (HELB) has disbursed more than 8 trillion Tanzanian shillings to approximately 830,000 students across the country since it was established.

As the board prepares to mark its 20th anniversary next year, it continues to play a pivotal role in supporting higher education in Tanzania.

This year alone, the board has allocated loans for 245,799 students, with a total of 787 billion shillings set aside for their education. Dr. Bill Kiwia, the Executive Director of the board, shared these updates in Dar es Salaam during a press briefing about the upcoming anniversary celebrations.

Dr. Kiwia outlined some of the exciting events planned to commemorate two decades of service. “We have a number of important activities lined up, starting with a charity marathon, the HELB Marathon. There will also be exhibitions and regional clinics where we will engage directly with students, parents, and other stakeholders,” he said.

These celebrations will not only mark the board’s achievements but also provide valuable opportunities for students and their families to learn more about the services available to them. In addition to the marathon, there will be seven regional clinics held in various parts of mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. These clinics are designed to provide guidance on financial support options and allow prospective students and parents to interact with board representatives.

Dr. Kiwia emphasized that the board’s mission goes far beyond just offering financial assistance. “Our work is about helping students pursue their academic goals and creating a brighter future for them. As we celebrate this milestone, we also want to connect with our community and continue to empower the next generation of Tanzanian leaders,” he said.

The upcoming anniversary celebrations are an important reminder of the board’s ongoing commitment to supporting Tanzanian students. With a focus on education, community engagement, and providing the tools for success, the Higher Education Loan Board continues to make a significant impact in the lives of many young Tanzanians.
