The government has disclosed alarming statistics concerning road accidents over the past five years. From 2019 to May 2024, there were 10,093 road accidents, resulting in 7,639 fatalities and 12,663 injuries, with some victims suffering permanent disabilities.

This report highlights the urgent need for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.

The breakdown of these statistics shows that private vehicles were involved in 3,250 accidents, leading to 2,090 deaths and 3,177 injuries. Bus accidents accounted for 790 incidents, resulting in 782 fatalities and 2,508 injuries. Additionally, there were 820 accidents involving daladala (minibuses), causing 777 deaths and 1,810 injuries. Taxi-related accidents were fewer, with 93 incidents, but they still resulted in 97 deaths and 173 injuries

These figures underscore a persistent challenge in maintaining road safety in Tanzania. The government has been actively seeking solutions to curb this trend. One significant initiative is the introduction of traffic cameras across various regions. These cameras are designed to monitor driver behavior and ensure compliance with traffic regulations, thereby reducing the occurrence of accidents caused by speeding and reckless driving

Moreover, the government has been emphasizing the importance of public education on road safety. Campaigns have been launched to inform the public about the dangers of non-compliance with traffic laws.

These initiatives are complemented by efforts to improve road infrastructure and ensure that vehicles on the roads are in good condition. Enhanced inspection protocols for commercial and private vehicles are also being implemented to ensure roadworthiness

Furthermore, road safety advocacy groups have been pushing for amendments to the Road Safety Act of 1973. These amendments aim to address contemporary challenges, such as mandating seat belt use for all passengers, requiring helmets for all motorcycle riders, and reducing the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers. The ultimate goal is to create a safer environment for all road users by adopting stricter and more comprehensive regulations

Government is also collaborating with international organizations to adopt best practices in road safety management. The integration of technology, such as the Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), helps monitor the movement of public transportation vehicles and enforce speed limits. This system has been credited with reducing accidents by providing real-time data to law enforcement agencies, enabling swift action against traffic violators

While the statistics paint a grim picture of road safety in Tanzania, the government’s multi-faceted approach, combining technology, public education, and regulatory reforms, shows promise in tackling this pressing issue.
