Tanzanians will have to dig deeper into their pockets this month as fuel prices rise, despite a decrease in global import costs.

The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has released new fuel prices for April 2025, showing an increase in petrol and kerosene prices while diesel remains relatively stable.

In Dar es Salaam, the price of petrol has risen to Sh3,037 per liter from Sh2,996 in March, while kerosene has also seen an increase, now selling at Sh3,053 per liter compared to Sh3,036 last month. However, diesel prices have dropped slightly, now standing at Sh2,936 per liter from the previous Sh2,885.

The trend is similar across other regions, with Tanga and Mtwara recording a petrol price increase of Sh41 and Sh40 per liter, respectively.

EWURA has attributed the price hike to a 1.91% increase in foreign exchange costs, which has affected the overall fuel pricing structure. “Even though import costs have dropped, factors such as the depreciation of the Tanzanian shilling and adjustments in transportation and distribution costs have led to higher prices at the pump,” the regulator explained.

Energy analysts believe that the pricing trend is not just influenced by global market conditions but also by local economic factors.

“The state of the economy and the strength of the shilling play a crucial role in determining fuel prices,” said Enock Musa, an industry analyst. “Even when global costs fall, other elements like logistics and exchange rates can push prices up.”

EWURA has reminded fuel retailers to comply with the official price caps and warned that strict legal action will be taken against those who attempt to exploit consumers by setting prices higher than permitted.
