Motorists in Tanzania are set to benefit from lower fuel costs this month, following the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) announcement of new fuel price caps effective today.
The move comes as global oil markets fluctuate and the Tanzanian shilling strengthens, easing import costs for the country.
Price Reductions Across Major Ports
In Dar es Salaam, the retail price for petrol has dropped to TZS 2,807 per litre, down from TZS 2,905 in August. Diesel prices are now TZS 2,754 per litre, while kerosene costs TZS 2,774. Similar reductions have been reported in Tanga and Mtwara ports, reflecting regional variations in shipping and logistics costs.
Factors Influencing Price Changes
EWURA said the decrease is largely due to a 0.2% drop in global petrol prices, a 5.5% reduction in diesel, and a 3.5% decline in kerosene. Strengthening of the Tanzanian shilling against major foreign currencies by 3.96% has also contributed to the relief for consumers.Shipping premiums vary across ports.

Dar es Salaam recorded increases—20.73% for petrol, 7.75% for diesel, and 2.62% for kerosene—while Tanga saw decreases of 12.66% for both petrol and diesel. Mtwara remained unchanged, highlighting how regional factors can influence fuel costs.
EWURA reminded retailers and wholesalers to sell fuel strictly at the approved prices. Non-compliance will result in legal action, and consumers are encouraged to report any violations while keeping receipts as proof of purchase.
