Thousands of people found themselves stranded overnight on the N’djili Bridge after the N’djili River burst its banks, flooding nearby areas and paralyzing transportation routes in Kinshasa.

What started as a heavy rainstorm on Sunday quickly escalated into a disaster, leaving residents of districts like Ndanu, Petro Congo, and Quarter 8 battling rising waters.

The floodwaters submerged homes, shops, and streets, catching many residents off guard. Cars stuck on the N’djili Bridge lined up for kilometers as drivers and passengers were left with no choice but to spend the night in their vehicles. In some areas, families sought refuge on higher ground, with many using whatever means available to escape the rising water.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic and distressing scene, with people scrambling to find safety. “It all happened so fast,” one resident shared. “The water just kept rising, and soon we couldn’t move. I had to climb up to a roof with my children just to stay safe.”

While local authorities confirmed that there have been casualties, the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Emergency response teams have been deployed, but access to the flooded areas remains limited, making rescue efforts challenging.

The disaster has highlighted the vulnerability of Kinshasa’s infrastructure, with drainage systems struggling to cope with the sudden downpour. Many people were left trapped as roads became impassable, making it difficult for emergency services to reach those in need.

As efforts to rescue stranded residents continue, local officials have warned that the threat is far from over. The weather forecast predicts more rainfall in the coming days, and authorities are urging people to remain alert, especially those living in flood-prone areas. Evacuation plans are in place for affected neighborhoods, though many are reluctant to leave their homes.

The flooding has also raised concerns about urban planning in Kinshasa, with many questioning whether the city is prepared for the challenges posed by climate change. Experts say the city’s rapid expansion and lack of effective flood management systems make it particularly vulnerable to such disasters.

In the meantime, local residents continue to hope for swift relief as aid agencies and government bodies coordinate efforts to bring supplies and support to those impacted by the flood. For now, the people of Kinshasa are left to rebuild and recover from the devastating effects of the disaster.
