At least eight people have been confirmed dead and 17 others rescued following a tragic boat accident on Lake Albert in the northeastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The incident occurred near Tchomia, in Ituri Province, when the vessel — carrying passengers along with various goods — was reportedly overwhelmed by strong winds before capsizing approximately two hours after departure.

Local authorities say rescue operations were immediately launched, leading to the successful saving of 17 individuals. However, concerns remain that more passengers could still be unaccounted for, as search efforts continue in the affected area.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as the boat struggled against powerful waves triggered by sudden weather changes. The region is known for unpredictable conditions on Lake Albert, particularly during periods of intense wind activity.

Maritime transport accidents are not uncommon in parts of the country, where many communities rely on water routes due to limited road infrastructure. Overloading, lack of safety equipment, and extreme weather conditions are often cited as contributing factors in such tragedies.

Officials have urged transport operators to adhere to safety regulations, including limiting passenger numbers and ensuring the availability of life-saving equipment. Meanwhile, families of the victims are mourning their loved ones as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident.

The disaster highlights ongoing safety challenges on inland waterways across the region, where enforcement of maritime regulations remains inconsistent.
