Dr. Wilbroad Slaa, the former Secretary General of the opposition party Chadema, appeared in Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam on January 17, 2025, to answer charges related to spreading false information.

Dr. Slaa, who is 76 years old, had been scheduled to appear in court earlier, on January 10, 2025, in connection with criminal case number 993 of 2025. The case had raised significant attention, especially following a legal motion to prevent him from being granted bail. This motion was filed by the prosecution and led to Dr. Slaa’s delayed court appearance.

When the case was heard on January 17, 2025, State Attorney Issa Tawabu informed the court that the hearing was intended to address the bail matter. However, Dr. Slaa had not yet arrived at the court. Tawabu stated that inquiries had been made, and they were told Dr. Slaa was not present.

In light of these developments and the ongoing discussion about his bail, Magistrate Beda Nyaki decided to adjourn the case until later that day.

Dr. Slaa is facing accusations of distributing false information on the social media platform X, under the provisions of the Cybercrimes Act, No. 14 of 2015. The alleged incident occurred on January 9, 2025, and the court is now tasked with determining the validity of the claims.

This case has attracted significant attention, partly due to Dr. Slaa’s political background and the broader context of misinformation in the country.
