Dog bite incidents in Katavi Region have shown a notable decline over the past two years, falling from 188 cases in 2023 to 108 in 2025. Officials attribute the reduction to ongoing vaccination campaigns and measures to control stray dogs.

Speaking on the decrease, Zidihery Muhando, the Regional Livestock Officer for Katavi, explained that over 64% of dog bite victims are children. He stressed that proper vaccination of dogs and managing stray animals remain key strategies in preventing the spread of rabies, a deadly viral disease. Muhando also noted that authorities have been euthanizing some stray dogs to reduce risks to public health.

To complement these efforts, Florence Chrisant, the Assistant Regional Administrative Secretary for Trade, Industry, and Investment, urged livestock owners to follow professional veterinary guidance.

She directed officials to enforce livestock management regulations and take legal action against owners who fail to vaccinate or properly control their dogs.

Authorities have announced plans for house-to-house campaigns to ensure that all dogs are vaccinated and to identify any animals that remain unprotected. These initiatives aim not only to protect residents from dog bites but also to reduce the wider community risks associated with unvaccinated animals.

The regional administration continues to encourage public cooperation and vigilance, emphasizing that responsible pet ownership is critical in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for everyone.
