Dodoma Unveils Bold Plan to Boost Tourism Sector

July 11, 2025

The Dodoma region is preparing to transform its tourism industry with the launch of a comprehensive strategic development plan designed to unlock vast potential and attract visitors from near and far.

This exciting announcement was made by Dodoma Regional Commissioner, Rose Senyamule, who emphasized that the new strategy will introduce innovative ideas and fresh opportunities to the heart of Tanzania’s capital city.

According to a statement from the Office of the Dodoma Regional Commissioner, the initiative is a collaborative effort with the Tanzania Tourism Sector Safety and Protection (TTSSP), a key agency dedicated to promoting sustainable and safe tourism growth nationwide.

Commissioner Senyamule noted Dodoma’s unique role not only as the political capital of Tanzania but also as a region rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty. The plan aims to leverage these assets to stimulate tourism development that benefits local communities while contributing to the country’s economy.

The official launch is scheduled for August 4, 2025, beginning at 9:00 a.m., at the Mabeyo Complex, a prominent venue in the city.

While Dodoma is widely recognized as Tanzania’s political capital, it has traditionally received less tourism attention compared to regions like Arusha or the Zanzibar Archipelago. However, Dodoma boasts a range of attractions including cultural festivals, traditional crafts, and proximity to natural landmarks such as the Wami River and scenic landscapes perfect for eco-tourism.

The strategic plan intends to change perceptions by highlighting these unique offerings and improving infrastructure, accommodation, and visitor services to make Dodoma a more attractive destination for both domestic and international travelers.

This tourism strategy is being developed in partnership with the Tanzania Tourism Sector Safety and Protection (TTSSP), which ensures that tourism development adheres to high standards of safety, environmental protection, and social responsibility. This aligns with Tanzania’s broader goals under the National Tourism Policy to foster responsible tourism that supports communities and conserves natural resources.

Such cooperation mirrors successful models seen in other parts of East Africa, where sustainable tourism has driven economic growth while preserving cultural and environmental assets.

Experts anticipate that the strategy will create new employment opportunities, boost small and medium enterprises, and encourage the preservation of local culture. Tourism’s role as a driver of economic diversification is crucial for Tanzania, especially in reducing reliance on agriculture and mining.

Moreover, the plan highlights community-based tourism initiatives, empowering residents to take an active role in managing tourism activities and sharing in the benefits.

The launch event on August 4, 2025, will bring together government officials, investors, tourism operators, and community leaders to explore the strategy’s framework and discuss its implementation timeline. This milestone marks a significant step in realizing Dodoma’s potential as a vibrant tourism destination.
