Authorities in Dar es Salaam have ordered the reinstatement of key public transport services in Mbagala following disruptions that erupted after the country’s recent general election.

The move comes as part of the government’s early measures to stabilise daily life and reassure residents affected by the unrest.

The directive was issued by the Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, during an inspection tour of several vandalised transport facilities in Temeke District. He stated that restoring essential services was a matter of urgency, especially in densely populated areas where residents depend heavily on public transport for work, trade and school-related travel.

Chalamila confirmed that the Bus Rapid Transit service at the Mbagala terminal will resume operations on Thursday, November 20, 2025. He said the decision followed a formal request from the Temeke District Commissioner, who stressed the need for immediate relief for commuters affected by the service disruption.

Although several BRT stations suffered significant damage, Chalamila clarified that no school facilities were burned or destroyed, easing growing fears among parents and local leaders. He added that a comprehensive damage assessment is underway to determine the full extent of losses involving both public infrastructure and private property.

He urged residents to remain calm as efforts continue to restore order and rebuild trust between communities and local authorities. Chalamila emphasised that it is crucial for citizens not to interpret political disagreements only on the surface, noting that such misunderstandings could fuel unnecessary divisions and provide opportunities for groups seeking to undermine national peace.

The aftermath of the general election saw heightened tension in several parts of the region, with transport services among the most visibly affected. Officials say the reinstatement of the BRT network represents an important step toward normalcy, as thousands of commuters rely on the system every day for their livelihoods.

For many families in Mbagala and other parts of Temeke, the return of the BRT service brings hope after days of mobility challenges. Residents say the restoration will reopen access to workplaces, reduce traffic congestion, and ease pressure on informal and expensive transport alternatives.

Government agencies continue to coordinate recovery efforts, promising further updates in the coming days. Authorities maintain that the broader objective is not only to repair damaged facilities but also to strengthen public confidence and ensure long-term stability in the nation’s largest commercial city.
