The police in Dar es Salaam have taken swift action to combat drunk driving during the festive season by suspending the licenses of 30 drivers.
These drivers were caught behind the wheel with blood alcohol levels above the legal limit of 80 milligrams per 100 milliliters of blood, a violation that can have serious consequences on road safety.
SACP Jumanne Muliro, the Regional Police Commander, explained that the crackdown occurred during the busy Christmas and New Year period when traffic is particularly heavy. “This is a necessary measure to ensure the safety of all road users during the festive season,” he said.

The suspended drivers came from three districts within the city:
- 22 drivers from Kinondoni
- 6 drivers from Ilala
- 2 drivers from Temeke
The police have confirmed that these drivers will face a six-month license suspension as part of the ongoing efforts to discourage drunk driving and protect citizens from the dangers associated with impaired driving.
Authorities have made it clear that these measures are part of a broader strategy to reduce traffic accidents, especially during times when people are more likely to drive under the influence after celebrating. The police are stepping up their presence on the roads with increased patrols and checkpoints to monitor drivers and enforce safety laws.
The public is reminded to stay responsible behind the wheel, particularly during celebrations, to avoid putting themselves and others at risk. The police have urged drivers to respect the traffic laws and avoid driving if they are intoxicated.
