The Parliament of Tanzania has officially elected Daniel Baran Sillo, the Member of Parliament for Babati Rural Constituency, as the new Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly for the 2025–2030 term.

The election, held in the nation’s capital Dodoma on November 13, 2025, saw Sillo win with an overwhelming show of confidence — all 371 votes cast in his favour.

Moments after being sworn in, Sillo pledged to serve with integrity, professionalism, and dedication. He expressed gratitude to fellow lawmakers for the trust they placed in him, promising to work hand in hand with the Speaker to strengthen the institution’s oversight role and ensure parliamentary debates truly reflect the needs of ordinary Tanzanians.

“This is not just a victory for me, but for every Tanzanian who believes in accountable leadership,” Sillo said shortly after taking his oath. “I will serve with humility, uphold the Constitution, and continue offering guidance that benefits our citizens.”

Sillo brings with him extensive experience from both the legislative and executive arms of government. Before this new appointment, he served as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Budget and later as Deputy Minister for Home Affairs — roles that exposed him to the complexities of governance and policy implementation.

Political observers in Dodoma noted that his unanimous election sends a strong message of unity within the House. Many MPs said his calm leadership style, coupled with his deep understanding of parliamentary procedures, made him an ideal candidate for the role.

Analysts also pointed out that Sillo’s rise marks a generational shift in the Tanzanian Parliament, blending experience with youthful energy at a time when the country is focusing on institutional reform and good governance. His leadership, they say, could help bridge communication between the executive and legislative branches — a crucial factor in ensuring smooth policy delivery.

Under Tanzania’s system of governance, the Deputy Speaker plays a pivotal role — presiding over sessions in the absence of the Speaker, maintaining order, and ensuring that the parliamentary process remains fair and efficient. Sillo’s tenure will run concurrently with the current five-year parliamentary term, from 2025 to 2030.
