Tanzania’s main opposition party, the Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema), has called for an independent investigation into the violent events of October 29, 2025, insisting that those responsible for deaths and injuries during the unrest must be held accountable.

The demand was presented during a meeting with Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, who held discussions with senior Chadema officials in Dar es Salaam. According to a statement released by the party on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the talks focused on Tanzania’s political climate following the disputed events that occurred late last year.

The Chadema delegation was led by Secretary-General John Mnyika and the party’s chief legal adviser Rugemeleza Nshala. The meeting took place at United Nations offices in Dar es Salaam, where the two sides discussed political developments in Tanzania and the broader implications of the October violence.

During the meeting, Mnyika reiterated the party’s position that an independent and impartial body should investigate the events of October 29. Chadema believes a neutral inquiry is necessary to identify those responsible for killings, injuries and alleged disappearances reported during the unrest.

According to the statement, the opposition party also handed the UN representative a resolution previously adopted by Chadema’s Central Committee on December 11, 2025. That resolution outlines the party’s official stance on the incident and calls for accountability as well as political reforms aimed at preventing similar events in the future.

“We continue to insist on an independent investigation to identify all individuals involved in the killings, injuries and disappearances that occurred on October 29 and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable,” Mnyika said in the statement released by the party.

Beyond the investigation, Chadema leaders also emphasised the need for constitutional reforms that would strengthen democratic institutions and ensure transparent elections in the country. The party argues that political tensions surrounding the October events have highlighted deeper systemic issues that require long-term solutions.

Observers say the October 29 violence has become a key reference point in Tanzania’s ongoing political debate. The incident, which reportedly resulted in several deaths and injuries, sparked widespread discussion about political freedoms, law enforcement conduct and electoral reforms. While the government has previously defended its handling of security matters, opposition groups and civil society organisations have continued to call for greater transparency.

The involvement of the United Nations representative suggests growing international attention on the situation. The UN regularly engages with national stakeholders to promote dialogue, peace and democratic governance in member states. More information about the global organisation’s work in conflict resolution and governance can be found through the United Nations, which supports diplomatic engagement and mediation in political disputes.

Political analysts say the meeting between Chadema leaders and the UN envoy reflects broader efforts to encourage dialogue at a time when tensions remain sensitive. They note that international actors often play a facilitative role in supporting discussions between political stakeholders and promoting peaceful solutions.

Chadema has maintained that addressing the October events transparently will help restore public confidence and prevent future confrontations. At the same time, the party insists that broader constitutional reforms are essential to guarantee fair and credible elections in the future.

As Tanzania moves forward, the issue of accountability and political reform is likely to remain at the centre of national debate. Whether the calls for an independent investigation gain traction will depend on how both domestic institutions and international partners respond in the coming months.
