The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy Dr. Doto Biteko, has instructed top local officials to take immediate legal action against an individual apprehended with stolen materials from the country’s electricity grid and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project.
Dr. Biteko made the announcement on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, in Dodoma during the launch of the 400 kV electricity transmission line project, which will stretch from Chalinze to Dodoma. This project is a vital part of Tanzania’s strategy to bolster its national energy grid and ensure reliable power supply to various regions.
Following the arrest of the suspect in Pwani Region, who was caught with parts tied to the theft of key materials for the energy grid and the SGR, Dr. Biteko expressed concern over the growing issue of infrastructure theft, which disrupts national projects and hinders development. “We cannot allow such activities to continue undermining the progress of our country,” he stressed, emphasizing the need for swift and firm action.
The stolen materials were found to be crucial to both the national power grid and the ongoing SGR project. These projects are essential to the country’s development, particularly in providing more reliable electricity and improving transportation infrastructure.
