Authorities Urged to Protect Waterways from Pollution

Authorities across Tanzania have been urged to take immediate action to prevent the dumping of solid waste into water drainage systems, a practice that threatens both public health and the environment.

The National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) has called on local government officials to ensure that drainage systems remain clean and free from blockages, particularly as the country prepares for expected heavy rains.lution

Speaking in Dar es Salaam, NEMC Director General Dr. Immaculate Semesi emphasized the need for stronger enforcement of environmental laws to prevent avoidable disasters. She pointed out that blocked drainage channels contribute to flooding, which often leads to outbreaks of waterborne diseases.

“We are reminding all local authorities of their legal obligation to oversee environmental safety, particularly in areas prone to risks like mining sites and excavation zones,” Dr. Semesi stated. “It is critical that communities living in these areas are protected from potential disasters.”

She further highlighted that waste management is a shared responsibility, urging the public to be more mindful of how they dispose of their garbage.

“Keeping our surroundings clean is not just about aesthetics—it’s about protecting our health, our infrastructure, and our future,” she said.

The call to action follows recent weather forecasts from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), warning of heavy rainfall that could exacerbate waste-related flooding issues. In many urban areas, improper waste disposal has led to clogged drainage systems, significantly increasing the risk of floods that damage homes, businesses, and roads.

NEMC has pledged to continue working with local authorities to enforce environmental regulations and hold accountable those who pollute public waterways. The council is also urging residents to take waste management seriously by using designated disposal sites and participating in community clean-up efforts.

With the rainy season fast approaching, authorities have been advised to ramp up public awareness campaigns on proper waste disposal practices. Experts warn that unless urgent steps are taken, pollution in drainage systems could have long-term consequences, not only harming ecosystems but also putting millions of people at risk of disease outbreaks.
