All Gas Producers Are in Favor of The Green Agenda

The point is that we should not abuse this green agenda for the domestic political purposes of certain countries.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for a balanced approach to the global energy transition, warning that environmental policies should not be exploited for the domestic political interests of individual countries at the expense of energy security and economic stability.

Putin made the remarks while addressing issues surrounding natural gas production and the transition towards cleaner energy sources, arguing that gas-producing nations support environmental objectives but must also consider the practical realities of the energy industry.

“All gas producers are in favor of the green agenda,” Putin said. “The point is that we should not abuse this green agenda for the domestic political purposes of certain countries.”

He urged energy-producing countries to act as responsible stakeholders by recognising the specific circumstances of the natural gas sector during the transition to cleaner energy and in the period that follows.

Putin’s comments reflect an ongoing international debate over how countries can reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining reliable and affordable energy supplies. Natural gas is widely used for electricity generation, industrial production, heating and cooking, making it an important component of the energy mix in many economies.

Supporters of natural gas argue that it can complement renewable sources such as solar and wind, particularly because gas-fired power plants can provide electricity when weather-dependent renewable generation is insufficient. However, natural gas remains a fossil fuel, and its combustion releases carbon dioxide. Methane leaks during production and transportation can also contribute significantly to global warming.

These environmental concerns have intensified pressure on governments and energy companies to improve emissions monitoring, reduce methane leakage and invest in cleaner technologies.

Putin’s remarks also highlight differences between countries over the pace and implementation of the energy transition. While some economies are accelerating investment in renewable energy and seeking to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, others continue to rely heavily on oil and gas revenues to finance public services, infrastructure and economic development.

For major gas-producing nations, an abrupt reduction in demand could affect government revenues, employment and investment in energy infrastructure. At the same time, countries dependent on imported energy face their own challenges, including price volatility, supply disruptions and the cost of transitioning to alternative sources.

The debate is particularly important for developing economies, where access to affordable and reliable electricity remains essential for industrialisation, healthcare, education and job creation. In parts of Africa, natural gas is viewed as a potential resource for expanding electricity generation and supporting industries, although investment decisions must account for environmental risks and the long-term competitiveness of cleaner alternatives.

A balanced energy transition would require cooperation between producers and consumers, alongside investment in renewable energy, efficient infrastructure, methane reduction and technologies capable of lowering emissions across the energy supply chain.

Ultimately, Putin’s message calls for energy policies that recognise the different economic circumstances of countries while pursuing environmental objectives. The central challenge for the international community is to ensure that climate action, energy security and economic development are addressed together, rather than allowing competing national interests to undermine progress towards a more sustainable global energy system.
