Tanzania’s Minister for Energy,   , has officially inaugurated Likong’o Pre-Primary and Primary School in Lindi Region, constructed at a cost of TZS 1.278 billion under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme associated with the country’s proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project.

The school has a capacity to accommodate 400 pupils, comprising 350 primary school pupils and 50 pre-primary learners. The facility is expected to improve teaching and learning conditions for children living in communities surrounding major energy investment projects.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Homera said the Sixth Phase Government, under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, remained committed to ensuring that investments in the energy sector deliver tangible benefits to citizens, particularly those living near project sites.

He said the construction of the school demonstrated the government’s commitment to linking major investments in the energy sector with improvements in essential social services.

According to the minister, the project was implemented through the CSR programme coordinated by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), in collaboration with investors involved in the LNG project.

Dr. Homera also explained that the government had provided tax exemptions to facilitate the implementation of the project, with the aim of encouraging investment in essential social infrastructure and ensuring that the country’s natural resources contribute to sustainable development.

He said information presented to him, together with his personal inspection, had confirmed that the school project was 100 per cent complete and had met the required standards for quality, safety and contractual compliance.

The completion of the school is expected to ease classroom congestion, improve the learning environment and provide teachers and pupils with more suitable facilities for their daily activities.

The minister added that access to appropriate educational infrastructure was essential for improving education standards and expanding opportunities for children to learn in a safe and supportive environment.

The development also highlights the potential role of CSR programmes in ensuring that communities near major investment projects benefit from improved public services alongside broader economic activities.

Tanzania’s LNG project is intended to support the development of the country’s natural gas resources. Through associated community development initiatives, investments in the sector are also expected to contribute to social and economic progress in areas surrounding project operations.

The inauguration of Likong’o Pre-Primary and Primary School represents a step towards strengthening educational infrastructure in Lindi Region while demonstrating how energy-related investments can support community development.
