Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi, has announced his decision to retire from politics and public service and resign from his position as Vice President.
Nchimbi said on August 25, 2026, that he had written to President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan informing her of his decision and his intention to step down from the office.
He said his resignation will officially take effect on September 4, 2026, adding that his decision was made in accordance with the requirements of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Nchimbi said that on August 27, 2025, he promised President Samia that he would serve her and the nation to the best of his ability and with loyalty. He also said he had pledged to vacate the position should the President believe she needed another Vice President.

“I am now fully convinced that the President desires changes, and I have therefore decided to fulfil my promise,” Nchimbi said.
The Vice President expressed his gratitude to President Samia and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) for the confidence they placed in him throughout his public service career.
He also thanked Tanzanians for their cooperation and support during his time in public service.
Despite announcing his retirement from politics and public service, Nchimbi stressed that he would continue to serve Tanzania as a responsible and patriotic citizen.
His announcement marks a significant development in Tanzania’s political landscape, with his resignation set to take effect on September 4, 2026.
