Tanzanian Swahili-language films and comedy productions are set to reach international audiences through French television network TV5Monde, in a move aimed at promoting the Kiswahili language and expanding the global reach of Tanzania’s creative industry.

Speaking in Kigoma, TV5Monde representative Alain Kisena said the initiative will provide Tanzanian filmmakers and content creators with an opportunity to showcase their productions to millions of viewers through the broadcaster’s television channels and digital platforms.

He said the programme forms part of broader efforts to promote Kiswahili internationally while giving greater visibility to Tanzania’s film and entertainment sector.

According to Kisena, TV5Monde and its social media platforms collectively reach more than 200 million people worldwide, offering Tanzanian productions unprecedented exposure to global audiences.

To make the content accessible to international viewers, Swahili films and comedy programmes will be accompanied by French and English subtitles, enabling non-Swahili speakers to follow the stories while introducing them to the language and Tanzania’s cultural heritage.

The initiative is expected to create new opportunities for Tanzanian actors, filmmakers and producers by opening access to international markets, strengthening cultural exchange and increasing global recognition of Kiswahili-language content.

The announcement comes as Tanzania continues efforts to position Kiswahili as a global language following its growing international recognition and adoption in education, diplomacy and media across different parts of the world.
