The World Health Organization has declared the escalating Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo a global health emergency, warning that the virus poses an increasing cross-border threat as infections continue spreading in the conflict-affected province of Ituri.
The declaration marks one of the strongest international responses to the outbreak so far and reflects growing concern among global health officials over the possibility of wider regional transmission across East and Central Africa.
According to the WHO, the outbreak has been linked to approximately 246 suspected cases, with more than 80 reported deaths. Health authorities cautioned, however, that the real number of infections could be significantly higher due to difficulties in surveillance, insecurity in affected areas and delays in case reporting.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there remains “considerable uncertainty” regarding both the actual scale of infections and the geographical spread of the virus.
“We continue to see considerable uncertainty about the actual number of people infected and the areas already reached by the disease,” Dr Tedros said while announcing the emergency declaration in Geneva.
Although the WHO stopped short of classifying the situation as a global pandemic, officials emphasized that the outbreak now represents a major international health risk requiring urgent coordination, funding and containment efforts.
The situation has become more alarming after two confirmed Ebola cases were detected in neighboring Uganda, intensifying fears that the virus could spread more widely across porous regional borders where population movement remains high.
Health experts warn that eastern Congo’s longstanding security challenges, weak healthcare infrastructure and displacement caused by armed conflict are complicating containment operations and increasing the risk of transmission.
International aid agencies are now racing to strengthen border screening, deploy emergency medical teams and expand vaccination campaigns in vulnerable areas.
Ebola, one of the world’s deadliest viral diseases, causes severe hemorrhagic fever and spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. Previous outbreaks in Central and West Africa have killed thousands and placed enormous strain on fragile health systems.

Analysts say the latest outbreak is especially concerning because of its location in a densely interconnected region where trade routes and cross-border movement could accelerate transmission if containment measures fail.
Governments across East Africa are already reviewing emergency preparedness plans, increasing surveillance at airports and border crossings, and coordinating with international health organizations to prevent wider spread.
Public health experts have also warned against panic and misinformation, emphasizing that rapid detection, isolation of cases and community cooperation remain critical to controlling the outbreak.
The emergency declaration comes at a time when many countries are still rebuilding public health systems weakened by recent global health crises, raising concerns about the capacity of poorer nations to respond effectively if infections expand further.
Updates from the World Health Organization, outbreak monitoring by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and humanitarian coordination through the United Nations are expected to shape the international response in the coming days.
As containment efforts intensify, global health officials warn that the speed and coordination of the response may determine whether the outbreak remains regionally contained or evolves into a far more dangerous international crisis.
