African Nations Warn Migrants as South Africa Violence Spreads

A growing wave of anti-immigrant violence in South Africa has triggered urgent travel warnings from several African governments, as tensions over migration, unemployment and social inequality spill into streets and homes, leaving foreign nationals increasingly fearful for their safety.

Governments including Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho and Zimbabwe have advised their citizens living in South Africa to remain indoors and exercise extreme caution following a series of protests and reported attacks targeting migrants from other sub-Saharan African countries.

At the same time, Ghana has taken the issue to the African continent’s diplomatic stage, lobbying the African Union to intervene as concerns grow over rising xenophobic sentiment and sporadic violence in parts of South Africa, the continent’s most industrialised economy.

The unrest has unfolded against a backdrop of long-standing economic pressures in South Africa, where unemployment remains above 30 percent and disproportionately affects Black communities. Analysts say these conditions have created fertile ground for frustration, which is increasingly being directed at foreign nationals seen as competing for jobs and resources.

Migrant rights organisations, however, strongly reject this narrative. They argue that migrants are being unfairly scapegoated for structural economic challenges that predate current migration patterns. Community leaders say many foreign nationals contribute significantly to South Africa’s informal economy, labour market, and small business sector.

The situation escalated further this week after Ghana confirmed it had helped secure the safe return of one of its citizens after a video circulating online appeared to show him being harassed by a crowd demanding identification documents. In the footage, the man is confronted and told, “We don’t want you here,” reflecting the intensity of hostility captured in some of the incidents.

Nigeria has also announced it is repatriating at least 130 of its citizens following the deaths of two Nigerians in separate incidents linked to the unrest, highlighting the growing regional impact of the violence.

Although Ghana did not specify the exact incident it referred to, its Foreign Ministry said it was closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with South African authorities to ensure the safety of its nationals.

Diplomatic efforts are now intensifying. Mozambique President Daniel Chapo met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this week, calling for calm and urging protection of foreign nationals. Meanwhile, Ghana has formally written to the African Union requesting urgent continental-level intervention.

Humanitarian groups warn that the situation risks further escalation if underlying grievances are not addressed. They stress that migration pressures, unemployment, and inequality must be tackled through long-term policy solutions rather than allowing tensions to spill over into violence.

For many migrants, however, the crisis is already deeply personal. Families report fear, displacement, and uncertainty as they weigh whether to remain in South Africa or return home. Some say they feel caught between economic survival and personal safety.

As regional diplomacy intensifies, pressure is mounting on South African authorities to restore calm and ensure protection for all residents, regardless of nationality. The coming days are expected to be critical in determining whether the situation stabilises or expands into a broader continental diplomatic crisis.

What is unfolding is no longer just a domestic issue—it is a regional test of unity, governance, and the promise of African solidarity in the face of rising social tension.
