China has reaffirmed its support for Iran’s right to pursue peaceful nuclear energy, while calling for urgent de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East amid growing fears of wider regional instability.
The position was outlined by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during talks in Beijing with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Araghchi. The high-level meeting comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension involving Iran, the United States, and regional actors across the Gulf.
According to Wang, China values Iran’s stated commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons and supports what he described as Tehran’s legitimate right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. He stressed that Beijing has consistently promoted dialogue and diplomacy since the current tensions began, warning that the region now stands at a critical crossroads between war and peace.
Wang called for an immediate ceasefire and urged all parties to avoid actions that could reignite or expand the conflict. He emphasized that restoring stability in the region should remain the top priority for the international community.
The Chinese minister also voiced support for Iran’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and national security, while commending Tehran for pursuing political solutions through diplomatic channels. He highlighted the importance of maintaining maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that continued instability could have severe consequences for global trade and energy markets.
China further urged Gulf and Middle Eastern nations to take greater responsibility for shaping the future of the region by strengthening dialogue and cooperation among neighboring states. Wang proposed deeper engagement between Iran and regional countries as part of efforts to establish a new regional security framework based on cooperation, mutual trust, and shared development.

He added that China remains ready to play what he described as a constructive role in reducing tensions, facilitating peace negotiations, and supporting long-term stability in the Middle East. Wang also described China as a reliable strategic partner for Iran, saying Beijing is prepared to deepen bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
For his part, Araghchi briefed the Chinese side on recent developments in talks between Iran and the United States, reiterating Tehran’s position that political disputes cannot be resolved through military action.
The Iranian foreign minister stated that Iran would continue defending its sovereignty and national dignity while remaining committed to seeking a durable diplomatic solution. He also suggested that reopening and stabilizing the Strait of Hormuz could be achieved quickly if tensions are reduced.
Araghchi praised China’s role in helping prevent further escalation and expressed confidence in Beijing’s continued support for peace efforts and regional security initiatives.
The meeting reflects China’s expanding diplomatic engagement in the Middle East as Beijing increasingly positions itself as a mediator and strategic player in regional affairs. Analysts say China’s approach underscores its growing interest in protecting energy routes, strengthening geopolitical influence, and promoting stability in regions critical to global trade.
As tensions continue to evolve, the talks between China and Iran are likely to be closely watched by international powers seeking to prevent further escalation and preserve fragile diplomatic pathways in the region.
