Domestic news outlet Al-Wasat reported that his body arrived in Bani Walid on Thursday ahead of the funeral and was received by groups of mourners.

During his father’s more than four decades in power, Saif al-Islam was widely viewed as the leading political heir. He later re-emerged in politics in 2021 when he announced a bid for the presidency, though the planned election was ultimately not held.

Authorities based in Tripoli have ordered a full investigation into the killing and issued condolences. Leaders aligned with the rival eastern administration have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.
