US–Russia Talks Leave Ukraine Peace Out of Reach

A five‑hour meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow between Russian President Vladimir Putin and envoys of U.S. President Donald Trump ended without agreement, leaving hopes for a diplomatic settlement in Ukraine unfulfilled.

The talks, which ran into the early hours of Wednesday, were described as “useful, constructive and substantive” by Russian presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov. However, he warned that sides remain far apart — especially on the core issue of territorial control.

Moscow reviewed a U.S.-backed proposal (originally a 28‑point plan, now revised) and four supplementary documents aimed at ending nearly four years of war in Ukraine. According to Ushakov, while some of the ideas “appear more or less acceptable,” many remain unacceptable to Russia, particularly those touching on region‑by‑region territorial concessions and demands linked to the status of the disputed territories.

The Kremlin reiterated that without resolving territorial disputes, it sees no possible resolution to the war. As a result, there is no “road map” emerging for a ceasefire or peace agreement. Ushakov said that though the negotiations will continue, both Washington and Moscow “have a lot of work ahead.”

Observers noted that the failure to reach compromise has stirred concern among European and Ukrainian officials. Many view the talks as largely symbolic, arguing that real progress on peace will require the involvement and consent of Kyiv and its European allies.

On the ground in Ukraine, conflict continues unabated. Moscow has repeated demands for territorial recognition, including control over regions in Donbas — demands firmly rejected by Kyiv and its partners. For now, the war appears destined to continue unless a new diplomatic impetus emerges.
