The presidents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda (Rwanda) are expected to travel to Washington (Washington) next week to sign a major peace agreement that could mark a turning point for one of Africa’s most troubled regions.

According to diplomatic sources, preparations are underway for the two heads of state to meet in the U.S. capital, where the signing ceremony is expected to take place under the mediation of former U.S. President Donald Trump. The initiative forms part of broader American efforts to reduce long-running tensions in eastern Congo, a region rich in minerals but destabilized by years of conflict.

Officials familiar with the process say the agreement builds on earlier commitments made by both countries, but the Washington meeting is designed to elevate the pledge to the highest political level. Key elements of the deal include enhanced security cooperation, measures to curb cross-border interference, and an economic framework aimed at stabilizing mineral supply chains that are vital to global markets.

Despite renewed optimism, observers remain cautious. Past peace initiatives between the two neighbours have often stalled once political momentum faded or ground realities proved too complex to manage.

Many local communities in eastern Congo have repeatedly voiced frustration, arguing that calm can only be achieved if armed groups are dismantled and regional meddling ends.

Even so, next week’s ceremony is being viewed as a significant step, offering a rare opportunity for the two nations to demonstrate genuine commitment. Diplomats note that sustained engagement, transparency, and independent monitoring will be essential for this agreement to deliver meaningful change.

If fully implemented, the pact could ease humanitarian pressures, open the door for stronger regional trade, and reshape the political landscape of Central Africa. For millions living in areas affected by violence, the hope is that this agreement will finally bring a durable peace after decades of uncertainty
