Zelensky Rejects Putin Invitation to Moscow Talks

The comments come shortly after Putin, during a visit to China, suggested that he is willing to hold talks if Zelenskyy agrees to meet in Moscow
September 6, 2025

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has once again turned down a proposal from Russian President Vladimir Putin to travel to Moscow for peace talks, insisting that any negotiations must respect Ukraine’s security and sovereignty.

Speaking during a recent address, Zelenskyy said that while dialogue is essential, he cannot go to the Russian capital amid ongoing attacks. “He can come to Kyiv. I cannot go to Moscow while our cities face daily missile strikes,” Zelenskyy stated, emphasizing that the Russian leader’s invitation does not reflect a genuine commitment to peace.

The Ukrainian president reaffirmed that talks must occur at the head-of-state level and should focus on achieving tangible results rather than serving as political theater. “If he truly wants peace, he will engage directly under conditions that respect Ukraine’s independence. Inviting me to Moscow appears more like a stalling tactic than a real offer,” Zelenskyy added.

Kremlin officials portrayed the proposal as an opportunity for dialogue, yet Zelenskyy and his administration remain cautious, citing continued military operations in eastern and southern Ukraine as evidence that Russia is not fully committed to negotiations.

Observers note that Zelenskyy’s refusal reflects a broader strategy to maintain the moral high ground internationally while avoiding any appearance of capitulation. The president has repeatedly emphasized that Ukraine is open to diplomacy but will not compromise national security or sovereignty for symbolic gestures.

As the conflict continues, Zelenskyy’s stance highlights the difficulties facing international mediators who have sought to bring the two leaders to the negotiating table. While invitations to Moscow have been extended, the focus remains on finding a format that ensures meaningful progress rather than mere optics.
