The Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) in Tanga Region has cited significant achievements in strengthening the solid waste management system in Tanga City as part of its operational success for the period from January to March 2025.

Speaking during a public briefing on the bureau’s quarterly performance, Acting Regional Head of PCCB-Tanga, Mariam Mayaya, highlighted that one of the key accomplishments during the review period was the successful implementation of legal and regulatory requirements concerning solid waste control in Tanzania.

She noted that the bureau had embraced the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) framework—locally known as Punguza, Tumia Tena na Rejeleza (PTR)—to guide improvements in waste management systems.

In Tanga Region, she added, this system was initially implemented in the wards of Central, Chumbageni, and Ngamiani Kati.

In addition to enforcing solid waste control laws, PCCB’s system analysis during the period also helped resolve payment issues for waste collection contractors, enabling the effective resumption of municipal waste services in the affected areas.

Mayaya further revealed that the bureau had conducted a total of 20 system reviews in key sectors such as environmental cleanliness, health, agriculture, and revenue collection. These reviews identified various weaknesses, and reports were submitted to relevant stakeholders. Several resolutions from these reports have already been implemented, while others are still in progress.

Regarding the monitoring of public funds, Mayaya disclosed that between January and March 2025, PCCB oversaw the management of funds in 54 development projects worth a total of TZS 240.26 billion (approximately USD 92 million).

These projects were spread across the water, education, and health sectors. Of the 54 projects, 12—valued at TZS 5.47 billion—were found to have implementation irregularities. The bureau provided recommendations for corrective action, which have since been adopted, ensuring that these projects now meet acceptable quality and value-for-money standards.
