Russian President Vladimir Putin is stepping up diplomatic efforts to find a political resolution to the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict, the Kremlin has said.

His spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, emphasized over the weekend that Moscow is committed to diplomacy but firmly opposes the proposed deployment of European Union peacekeepers to Ukrainian territory.

Speaking on Saturday, Peskov called the idea of sending international peacekeeping forces “inappropriate” and warned that such a move could undermine genuine efforts for peace. “This would not facilitate dialogue or reconciliation — rather, it could complicate an already fragile situation,” he said during a press briefing.

According to Peskov, the path to peace is not a simple matter of signing a treaty but involves numerous, delicate steps. “A diplomatic resolution depends on many small but crucial details that matter deeply for the future of both Russia and Ukraine,” he explained, suggesting that any final agreement must be comprehensive and carefully structured.

In an interview on Saturday, Zelenskyy suggested Turkey as a potential host for the meeting, tentatively proposed for May 15. However, he insisted that any dialogue must be preceded by an immediate ceasefire.

“A ceasefire must come first — only then can we talk about peace,” Zelenskyy said, calling Putin’s renewed interest in negotiations a “positive signal.”

The U.S. has echoed similar sentiments. President Donald Trump, who has been increasingly vocal on foreign policy, urged Ukraine to engage in direct peace talks with Russia. He stated that negotiations are crucial to saving lives and stabilizing the region.

Despite these calls for diplomacy, Russia launched a large-scale drone attack on multiple Ukrainian cities just hours after floating the idea of peace talks. The move has cast doubt on the sincerity of Moscow’s intentions and sparked global criticism.
