Charles Hilary Nkwanga, the former Director of Presidential Communications at State House Zanzibar and Government Spokesperson for the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (SMZ), passed away in the early hours of Sunday, May 11, 2025.
According to a statement posted on the official social media accounts of Azam TV, a station where Hilary had worked for many years before his 2023 appointment by Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Hilary died after a sudden illness. He reportedly passed away en route to Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) – Mloganzila Campus.

Charles Hilary was a veteran journalist and broadcaster who built a remarkable media career. He held senior roles at Azam Media Limited and served as Director of UFM Radio.
His professional journey spanned both domestic and international platforms. Notably, he worked with the former Radio Tanzania Dar es Salaam (RTD), now the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), and also with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).
The media fraternity mourns the loss of a prominent figure whose dedication and service to public communication left a lasting legacy across Tanzania and beyond.
