The Government of Tanzania has issued an official response to the European Parliament‘s resolution dated May 8, 2025, which expressed concerns over the country’s ongoing legal proceedings and governance trends.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, the government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the principles of the rule of law, democracy, and human rights in accordance with the country’s Constitution.
The Ministry highlighted that, since March 2021, Tanzania has been carrying out sweeping political and legal reforms under the framework of the 4R philosophy—which stands for Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms, and Rebuilding. These reforms, according to the government, have resulted in significant progress, including expanded political freedoms, enhanced media freedom, and the establishment of an Independent Electoral Commission through electoral law amendments passed in March 2024.
“As a sovereign country governed by its constitution, it is crucial for international institutions to respect the independence of our judiciary,” the statement said.

It further noted that any attempt to interfere in ongoing judicial matters undermines the very principles of judicial independence recognized internationally, including by the European Union.
The statement also expressed concern over the tendency of some international institutions to rely on “incomplete or biased information” without using proper diplomatic channels. According to the Ministry, such narratives misrepresent the actual situation on the ground and fail to acknowledge major political reforms and ongoing efforts to strengthen peace and stability in the region.
“Tanzania remains committed to working with the European Union and other global partners in a spirit of mutual respect, transparency, and contextual understanding of each country’s legal and cultural framework,” the Ministry stressed.
