Tanzania is mourning the loss of Ambassador Juma Volter Mwapachu, a highly respected diplomat and statesman, who passed away on the evening of March 28, 2025, at Muhimbili National Hospital. He had been receiving treatment before his passing.

Born on September 27, 1942, in Mwanza, Mwapachu built an impressive career that spanned diplomacy, law, banking, and rural development. His contributions to Tanzania and the wider East African region left a lasting impact, making him one of the most influential figures in the country’s political and economic landscape.

A law graduate from the University of Dar es Salaam, Mwapachu furthered his studies in India, specializing in international law and diplomacy. Over the years, his expertise earned him leadership positions in both the public and private sectors. He served as Tanzania’s Ambassador to France and was also the country’s permanent representative to UNESCO. he released his autobiography, A Journey, which chronicled his experiences and contributions to Tanzania’s development. where he played a key role in strengthening regional cooperation among member states.

Throughout his life, Mwapachu was not only a diplomat but also a visionary leader who helped establish major institutions such as the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, the Confederation of Tanzania Industries, and the East African Business Council. His leadership extended to the banking sector, where he served as Chairman of Exim Bank Tanzania’s Board of Directors from 2020.

In August 2023, he released his autobiography, A Journey, which chronicled his experiences and contributions to Tanzania’s development. The book was widely praised for providing deep insights into the country’s political and economic history.

His passing marks the end of an era for Tanzania’s diplomatic community. Many remember him as a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly to advance the country’s interests both at home and on the international stage. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
