Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces,   General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, revealed that his father, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, will be promoted to the esteemed rank of Marshal on June 9, 2025.

This historic promotion will take place during Uganda’s Heroes’ Day celebrations, a day dedicated to honoring the nation’s heroes and freedom fighters.

General Muhoozi made the announcement on social media, where he shared that this promotion is a significant milestone not only for President Museveni but for Uganda as a whole. Currently holding the rank of General, President Museveni has been in power since 1986, following the overthrow of previous leaders. His leadership, marked by the formation of the National Resistance Army that eventually led him to the presidency, has been central to Uganda’s military and political landscape.

The title of Marshal is a rare distinction, and this promotion underscores President Museveni’s continued influence and leadership within Uganda’s armed forces. It also highlights the close relationship between the military and political spheres in the country, a connection that has shaped the course of Uganda’s history for decades.

The Heroes’ Day celebration, which will coincide with this important promotion, is a day when Uganda reflects on the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country’s independence and freedom.
