Minister Bashungwa Unveils New Buses for Inmates

Tanzania’s Minister of Home Affairs, Innocent Bashungwa, has launched seven new buses for the country’s Prison Service.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony on February 14, 2025, at the Prison Service Headquarters in Dodoma, Bashungwa urged officials to take good care of the buses, emphasizing the need to maintain them for long-term service and reliable transport for inmates.

During his speech, Bashungwa also praised the government’s ongoing efforts to improve the prison infrastructure, recognizing the importance of providing the best resources for the service. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that the Prison Service operates effectively, with a focus on maintaining high standards in all its activities, including the transportation of prisoners.

In addition to the transport improvements, the minister directed the Prison Service to fully implement a vocational training program for inmates, offering them practical skills and VETA certificates. This initiative aims to equip prisoners with the skills needed to support themselves after their release, reducing the chances of reoffending and helping them reintegrate into society successfully.

The Commissioner General of Prisons, Dr. Juma Malewa, expressed his appreciation for the government’s efforts, highlighting how the new buses would improve transportation logistics and strengthen security within the prison system. He added that the collaboration between the government and the Prison Service will continue to grow, aiming to enhance the overall criminal justice system in the country.

This new development is part of broader efforts by the government to reform and strengthen the prison system, ensuring that the rights of inmates are respected while also improving the efficiency and safety of the correctional facilities. The changes reflect a commitment to rehabilitation, helping inmates transition to life after prison with the right support and skills to succeed.
