Tensions are rising in Eastern Congo as the M23 rebels, who are backed by Rwanda, announced on Thursday that they intend to push their fight all the way to Kinshasa, the country’s capital.

This bold statement comes as President Félix Tshisekedi calls for a massive mobilization of military forces to resist the rebellion, while Defense Minister Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita firmly rejected any idea of negotiations with the rebels.

In a passionate video message, Muadiamvita made it clear that he has ordered any plans for dialogue with the rebels to be completely abandoned. “We will stay here in Congo and fight. If we do not stay alive here, let’s stay dead here,” he declared, showing his strong support for President Tshisekedi.

At a press briefing aimed at asserting their control over Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo, and the surrounding South Kivu province, M23 leaders expressed a willingness to talk with the government. This openness to dialogue was also suggested by the East African regional bloc, which includes Rwanda.

However, Corneille Nangaa, one of the political leaders of M23, made it clear that their ultimate goal is to gain political power. “We want to go to Kinshasa, take power and lead the country,” he stated. While he did not provide details on how they plan to reach the capital, which is more than 1,500 kilometers (nearly 1,000 miles) away, his words signal a determination to pursue their ambitions.

As both sides prepare for what could be a significant confrontation, the situation remains tense and uncertain for the people of Eastern Congo.
