The Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) has begun offering water birth services, allowing mothers to give birth in a special birthing jacuzzi. This method helps reduce pain for the mother before and during delivery and lowers the risk of vaginal tearing.
This announcement was made by the MNH Executive Director Prof. Mohamed Janabi, during the opening of a five-day training session at the hospital. The training, led by Barbara Harper from Water Birth International in the United States, is attended by nurses, midwives, obstetricians, and pediatricians from Muhimbili National Hospital Upanga and Mloganzila, Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital, and Lugalo.
“Through this service, a pregnant mother enters a jacuzzi filled with warm water, and the baby is born in the water. This allows the baby to receive all the blood from the placenta and umbilical cord, reducing the number of babies born with anemia, lowering the risk of respiratory issues, and ensuring the baby receives all the remaining nutrients from the umbilical cord,” explained Prof. Janabi.

“For the mother, this service helps reduce the risk of tearing during delivery. The mother is not subjected to additional interventions, as the warm water and her position help relax the muscles, making it easier for the baby to be born. The mother can be close to her baby immediately after birth, reducing stress and providing comfort for both mother and baby. It shortens the duration of labor, decreases the number of cesarean deliveries, and eliminates the need for labor-inducing drugs,” he added.
Additionally, Prof. Janabi highlighted that this service promotes privacy and dignity, stating that it has been used in various countries worldwide.
“It is one of the services that enhances dignity and respect. It is safe and has been used in many countries globally, with numerous studies confirming its effectiveness,” he said.
