Recent move by the government to amend the law governing the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) has ignited discussions and raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of current penalties imposed on ground transport operators.
Criticism has been directed at the existing penalty system, which imposes fines starting from 250,000 Tanzanian Shillings for various ground transport violations. Stakeholders in the transportation sector have questioned the fairness and appropriateness of these penalties, particularly given the diverse nature of transport operations.
Operators have voiced their discontent, arguing that the current penalties are disproportionately high and place a significant financial burden, especially on small-scale operators. Many advocate for a shift from punitive measures towards more educational approaches and targeted enforcement based on the severity of infractions.
