Approximately 55 people were killed in a landslide in a southern village of Ethiopia on Monday, local authorities said, warning that the death toll could rise.
“More than 55 bodies have been recovered from the landslide,” a statement from the Gofa Zone Communications Affairs Department quoted the local chief Dagmawi Zerihun as saying, who also cautioned that “the death toll may still rise.”
The landslides occurred around 10:00 AM following heavy rains in the mountainous area of Ethiopia’s Southern region, according to Dagmawi.

Women and children were among those who lost their lives, he said, adding that search and rescue efforts were “intensely ongoing.
Photos shared on Facebook by the state-affiliated media outlet Fana Broadcasting Corporate showed hundreds of people near the area of red mudslide devastation. The images depicted people using bare hands to dig through debris in search of survivors.
The Gofa Zone is approximately 450 kilometers (270 miles) south of the capital Addis Ababa, a journey of about 10 hours, and lies north of the Maze National Park.
The Southern Ethiopia region has been affected by short rains between April and early May, causing floods and forcing many people to flee their homes, according to the UN humanitarian aid agency OCHA.
