On the morning of June 25, the peaceful village of Kazkeel in Sudan’s North Kordofan state was abruptly disrupted by heavy gunfire.

Fighters from the paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), notorious for their role in Sudan’s ongoing conflict, stormed the village on motorbikes, burning homes and agricultural fields while firing artillery rounds.

The assault forced women, children, and other residents to flee for their lives amid the chaos. Hamisa, a local mother, described the terrifying ordeal: “We were having breakfast when the shooting started. I gathered my seven children and elderly mother and fled. Sadly, I witnessed six young men from our community get killed by the attackers.”

This attack forms part of the wider Sudanese conflict that erupted in April 2023 between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). The conflict has triggered a massive humanitarian crisis, displacing over 12 million people, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

North Kordofan, a region historically impacted by conflict and drought, has seen escalating violence since the recent Siege of El Obeid, a critical city under prolonged attack by armed groups.

The humanitarian crisis is compounded by restricted access to essential aid. Ongoing fighting and insecurity hamper efforts by organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and United Nations agencies to deliver food, medical supplies, and shelter.

International calls for ceasefire agreements and humanitarian corridors continue amid the complex political and security challenges. Meanwhile, communities like Kazkeel remain trapped in the crossfire, facing an uncertain future.

This deepening crisis underscores the urgent need for coordinated diplomatic efforts and sustained humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of millions caught in Sudan’s conflict.
