According to UN agencies, nearly two-thirds of Sudan’s population is in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

The United Nations has issued an urgent appeal for $6 billion in humanitarian aid to support millions of people affected by the ongoing crisis in Sudan.

The call comes as the country faces an escalating humanitarian emergency, with severe shortages of food, medical supplies, and essential services.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in violent conflict between the national army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The fighting has displaced more than 12 million people, with approximately 3.5 million fleeing to neighboring countries such as Chad, Egypt, and South Sudan.

According to UN agencies, nearly two-thirds of Sudan’s population is in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Widespread food insecurity has become a critical issue, particularly in conflict-ridden areas such as Darfur, where reports indicate a rising number of malnourished children and a severe lack of medical services.

Speaking on the crisis, Tom Fletcher, the UN’s Emergency Coordinator for Sudan, stated, “Sudan is experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time. Millions of lives are at risk, and without immediate intervention, the situation will deteriorate further.”

Despite efforts by international organizations, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), aid operations continue to face significant challenges. Refugee camps are overcrowded, resources are stretched thin, and humanitarian convoys have encountered security threats and bureaucratic obstacles in delivering assistance to affected communities.

The UN has emphasized that immediate financial contributions are necessary to ensure the delivery of food, shelter, and healthcare services to those in need. The organization has also urged global leaders to take swift action in addressing the crisis and securing safe passage for humanitarian aid.

As the conflict continues, Sudan’s humanitarian situation is rapidly worsening, with fears that, without international support, millions could face famine, disease, and further displacement. The UN’s appeal highlights the urgent need for a coordinated global response to prevent the crisis from deepening further.
