Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Moscow, marking one of the most intense assaults on the Russian capital since the war began.
The strike, which took place early Tuesday, sent shockwaves through the city, leading to airport closures, civilian injuries, and a heightened state of alert.
Russian authorities reported that air defense systems intercepted dozens of drones, but some managed to penetrate the city’s defenses, causing damage in several districts. One person was killed, and multiple others sustained injuries as debris from intercepted drones fell onto buildings and vehicles. Fires broke out in various locations, and emergency response teams were quickly deployed to contain the situation.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the attack, stating that security forces were on high alert and working to prevent further incidents. The Federal Air Transport Agency imposed temporary flight restrictions at key airports as a precautionary measure, leading to delays and flight diversions.
The timing of the attack is particularly striking, as it coincides with ongoing peace talks between Ukrainian and U.S. officials in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Ukrainian delegates, including top government officials, are engaged in discussions aimed at exploring possible pathways to de-escalation. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not present at the talks, he expressed hope that diplomatic efforts could bring about meaningful progress.

Meanwhile, in response to the drone strike, Russian forces intensified their military operations in the Kursk region, targeting Ukrainian positions in what officials described as a defensive countermeasure. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that, in addition to the Moscow attack, Ukrainian drones were intercepted over several other regions, with a total of 337 drones reportedly shot down in the past 24 hours.
The use of drones has become a significant aspect of modern warfare, with both Ukraine and Russia relying on them for reconnaissance and strategic attacks. This latest incident underscores the growing role of unmanned aerial systems in the conflict and raises concerns about the potential for further escalation.
International reactions to the attack have been swift, with world leaders urging restraint from both sides. The United Nations has called for renewed efforts to reach a ceasefire and prevent further civilian casualties.
