The United States’ acting envoy to Tanzania has issued a firm reminder to Tanzanians traveling to the United States: respect the terms of your visa and depart on time.
Andrew Lentz, the Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam, emphasized that overstaying a visa is a serious violation that can have long-term consequences for future travel. Speaking at a recent briefing, Lentz said the embassy has been working closely with the Tanzanian government to ensure travelers understand the rules and expectations for legal travel to the U.S.
“Like other countries around the world, immigration is a top priority for us,” Lentz said. “If you enter the United States legally with a valid visa, conduct your business, enjoy your stay, but when it is time to leave, depart as required. Overstaying a visa can create complications not only for the individual but also for broader travel relations between our countries.”
The envoy noted that U.S. authorities are increasing scrutiny on travelers to ensure compliance with immigration laws. “We must work together as partners to address the challenges of visa overstays. Border security is a sovereign right for the United States, just as it is for Tanzania,” Lentz added.

The embassy has also launched outreach efforts to inform Tanzanians about visa regulations, including informational sessions and online resources explaining how to apply for a visa and maintain legal status while in the U.S. These efforts aim to strengthen travel compliance and foster good relations between the two countries.
Tanzanians seeking guidance on visa applications and immigration rules are encouraged to consult the U.S. Embassy in Tanzania or review official U.S. visa information to ensure they understand the obligations attached to their travel permits.
Lentz concluded by reminding travelers that adhering to visa rules is not only a legal obligation but also a gesture of respect for bilateral relations. “Following visa conditions helps maintain the integrity of the immigration system and ensures that citizens can continue to travel safely and lawfully between Tanzania and the United States,” he said.
