Trump Says Ukraine Peace Talks Tougher Than Expected

U.S. President Donald Trump has admitted that efforts to end the war in Ukraine have proven far more complicated than he initially believed.

Speaking at a joint press conference in London alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump voiced his disappointment with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying their relationship had not delivered the breakthrough he once anticipated.

“I thought it would be one of the easiest conflicts to solve because of my personal ties with President Putin,” Trump told reporters. “But he has let me down — let me down badly.”

Trump emphasized that his administration has claimed progress in easing tensions in other global disputes, but Ukraine has proven uniquely difficult. His remarks revealed not just a diplomatic challenge, but also a personal frustration: the idea that personal rapport could translate into peace has faltered in the face of geopolitical realities.

Prime Minister Starmer stressed that the United Kingdom and its allies remain committed to supporting Kyiv. He described the effort as part of a coalition of the willing, underscoring how international partnerships will be central to countering Moscow’s actions.

Trump acknowledged the importance of such alliances, noting that sanctions, economic pressure, and collective support for Ukraine will remain essential in keeping Russia engaged in talks.

The U.S. leader’s candid admission may mark a shift from relying on personal ties to adopting a broader, more pragmatic approach rooted in international cooperation. For Ukrainians, however, the statement underscores a grim truth: peace is still far from certain, and the war’s toll continues to weigh heavily on their nation.
