Trump Ends Secret Service Protection For Harris

While officials emphasized that the decision is within the president’s authority, critics have questioned the timing and motivations, pointing to potential political implications.
August 30, 2025

Former Vice President Kamala Harris will no longer receive protection from the United States Secret Service, following a decision by President Donald Trump.

The move, announced by White House officials, takes effect September 1, 2025, ending an extended security arrangement that had been put in place by former President Joe Biden.

Typically, former vice presidents receive six months of Secret Service protection after leaving office. However, shortly before his term ended in January 2025, President Biden quietly extended security for Harris. Trump’s recent decision abruptly revokes this extension, ending her federal protection just months after the 2024 presidential election.

The announcement comes as Harris prepares for a high-profile book tour later this year, during which she is expected to make multiple public appearances across the United States and internationally. Her memoir, reflecting on the final weeks of the 2024 campaign in which she stepped in for Biden as the Democratic nominee, has drawn significant public interest.

Harris’ tenure as the Democratic candidate lasted 107 days before her decisive defeat, and she has maintained a relatively low profile since the election. While officials emphasized that the decision is within the president’s authority, critics have questioned the timing and motivations, pointing to potential political implications.

The revocation also follows a period of heightened security concerns in American politics. Trump himself survived two assassination attempts leading up to the November 2024 election, highlighting the high-stakes environment in which former national leaders operate. Observers note that the decision raises broader questions about the consistency of security provisions for former officials and the potential influence of political considerations in such determinations.
