Trump Eases Rocket Launch Rules, Boosts Space Industry

The changes could accelerate launches for a range of clients, including NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense, while facilitating the development of new spaceports across the country.
August 14, 2025

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 13, 2025, aimed at relaxing federal regulations for commercial rocket launches.

The order is intended to simplify the permitting process by removing or speeding up environmental reviews for launch licenses managed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The directive, known as “Enabling Competition in the Commercial Space Industry,” instructs the U.S. Transportation Secretary to eliminate outdated rules for launch and reentry vehicles. By reducing bureaucratic obstacles, the policy aims to encourage innovation and investment in the commercial space sector.

Private companies, particularly SpaceX, are expected to benefit significantly. The changes could accelerate launches for a range of clients, including NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense, while facilitating the development of new spaceports across the country.

Despite its industry benefits, the order has drawn criticism from environmental groups. Opponents warn that reducing environmental reviews could endanger local ecosystems, wildlife, and communities near launch sites, highlighting the need to balance commercial growth with ecological protection.

The executive order underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the U.S. role in the global space market while aiming to streamline regulations that have been viewed as burdensome by private aerospace companies.
