Trump Confirms Peace Talks Between Russia, Ukraine Soon

Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s position remains unchanged: any resolution must begin with a full and unconditional ceasefire. He warned that if Moscow continues to resist good-faith talks, then international sanctions should be tightened.
May 20, 2025

Donald Trump, President of the United States, announced that Russia and Ukraine will begin urgent negotiations aimed at achieving a ceasefire and ultimately ending the war that has raged since 2022.

The announcement followed a lengthy two-hour phone conversation between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Trump, the call “went very well,” and both sides have agreed to initiate peace talks immediately.

Trump made the disclosure via a post on Truth Social, stating:

“Russia and Ukraine will begin negotiations immediately for a ceasefire, and more importantly, an end to the war. The terms will be decided between them, because they understand the complexities better than anyone.”

Soon after speaking with Putin, Trump also contacted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who confirmed Ukraine’s openness to dialogue, provided that Western allies, particularly the United States and European Union, remain actively engaged in the peace process.

“It’s a critical time for diplomacy,” Zelenskyy said in Kyiv. “If the West disengages now, the only beneficiary will be Putin.”

While no timeline or location has been formally announced, speculation is already swirling. Neutral venues like Switzerland, Austria, or Turkey are being floated as possible hosts for the peace summit.

Putin, meanwhile, has reportedly expressed willingness to cooperate on what he termed a “future peace agreement,” although he stopped short of promising an immediate ceasefire. Russian state media quoted the Kremlin as saying that any settlement would have to address long-standing concerns over NATO’s eastward expansion and the status of eastern Ukrainian territories.

Trump on the other hand talks about memorandums and a “possible future” of peace.Statements from both presidents hardly seem to cement any kind of solid ground which lasting deals can be quickly built.

Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s position remains unchanged: any resolution must begin with a full and unconditional ceasefire. He warned that if Moscow continues to resist good-faith talks, then international sanctions should be tightened.

“We are not negotiating our sovereignty,” Zelenskyy said. “We want peace, not compromise.”

The proposed negotiations come amid increasing pressure from global leaders for a diplomatic solution to the conflict. European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron of France and Olaf Scholz of Germany welcomed the move but reiterated the importance of including European stakeholders in any peace process.

The Russia–Ukraine war has devastated lives and economies since it began in February 2022. According to the United Nations, millions have been displaced, and thousands have died in the fighting.

Though peace remains uncertain, Trump’s announcement has brought cautious optimism. Whether the upcoming talks will yield meaningful progress or remain symbolic gestures depends largely on the willingness of both Moscow and Kyiv to compromise on deeply rooted issues. As the world watches, hopes remain high for a resolution that could finally bring relief to a region scarred by years of bloodshed.

  1. My question is why is Trump feeling and acting all powerful in this Russian-Ukraine ceasefire deal. He even told a reporter while in the middle east that Putin did not go to Turkey for the peace talks because he trump was not present. What does he knows about Putin that he feels too controlling towards both sides actually
